The assessment of biogeochemical transformations in the subsurface is challenged by the structural complexity of heterogeneous porous media at various scales as well as by the complex interplay of biotic and abiotic processes controlling the dynamics and distribution of reactive pathways. Model-based descriptions of subsurface systems allow coupling physical, chemical and biological processes, which makes modeling approaches and model-based evaluation of experimental observations instrumental to understand and quantitatively interpret biogeochemical processes in complex subsurface environments.

In recent years, a number of novel experimental techniques have been introduced which allow for an improved understanding of biogeochemical transformations and their driving factors. This requires integrating knowledge and data from techniques such as stable isotope analysis and molecular biology methods into more advanced modeling concepts. The focus of this session will be the recent developments of modeling biogeochemical processes in the subsurface.  We particularly welcome contributions providing quantitative model-based interpretation of stable isotope data, but also innovative description of subsurface biomass dynamics and microbial community interactions are of interest. We invite submissions from all fields of subsurface biogeochemistry, including field and laboratory systems. Process-oriented small-scale studies as well as effective approaches for the large scale, and any combinations thereof are welcome.
